Speed of a Snail |
|
"The fastest speed
achieved by a snail in the Guinness Gastropod Championship, held over a
13-inch (330-millimetre) course in the O'Conor Don pub in central London, is
only 0.0085 kilometres per hour. This record is held by a mollusc called
Archie, which took 2 minutes and 20 seconds to cover the course."
"Well, the fastest snail that I've ever had covered a two foot course,
which is a standard course for a snail race … in some three minutes flat. Now
any mathematicians listening to the program will realize straight away that
works out at 132 hours to travel a full mile." |

The World Water Speed
record, like the air speed record, is decades old. Australian Ken Warby set
the record in 1978 when he averaged 317.60 mph in a 27-foot jet-powered
hydroplane called "Spirit of Australia." The official speed test,
which consists of two back-to-back runs over a one-kilometer straight-away,
took place on Blowering Dam in New South Wales, Australia. And where did
Warby design and build this hydraulic masterpiece? Underneath a tree in the
back yard of a house he was renting in suburban Sydney. "There was a
canvas sheet I used to throw over it when it rained," he told the press. |

The Tokaido Shinkansen,
connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, was inaugurated in the year 1964
as the first shinkansen line and the world's first high speed train. In 1964
the trains already run with speeds of about 200 km/h. Nowadays (2007) they reach
speeds of over 300 km/h in typical operation. On December 2, 2003, a
three-car train set attained a maximum speed of 581 km/h in a manned vehicle
run.

World's Fastest Car |

The
battle to break the sound barrier on land was won exactly 50 years after
Chuck Yeager broke it in the air ... On October 13, 1997, a British jet car
called ThrustSSC made two supersonic passes across Nevada's Black Rock desert
at 760.135 m.p.h. and 763.168 m.p.h. It took British fighter pilot Andy Green
exactly 61 minutes to make the two runs, narrowly disqualifying him for an
official land speed record, which requires that the two runs be made within
60 minutes. Two days later the first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record
was made official when the ThrustSSC completed two runs within an hour at an
average speed of 763.035mph. |

There
are a variety of different types of .22 Long Rifle (or ".22 LR")
loads. They are often divided into 4 distinct categories: 1) subsonic
velocity (also includes "target" or "match" loads at
velocities below 1100 feet per second nominal velocity); 2) standard velocity (1120 -1135 feet per
second nominal velocity); 3) high velocity (1200-1310 feet per second nominal
velocity) |

Aircraft |

The F-16
Fighting Falcon is a multirole jet fighter
aircraft developed by General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin for the United
States Air Force. Designed as a lightweight fighter, it evolved into a
successful multirole aircraft. The Falcon's versatility is a paramount reason
it was a success on the export market, serving 24 countries. The F-16 is the
largest Western fighter program with over 4,000 aircraft built since
production started in 1976. Though no longer produced for the US Air Force,
it is still produced for export. The maximum speed of the F-16 is Mach 2
(1,320 mph, 2,124 km/h) at altitude.

World's Fastest Airplane |

The Lockheed SR-71
Blackbird is, to date (2007), the fastest airplane ever to streak across the
sky, even though it's more than 30 years old. Capable of speeds over 2200
miles per hour -- that's more than three times the speed of sound -- the
SR-71 can fly at altitudes above 80,000 feet. What does it feel like to
travel at Mach 3, 15 miles above the earth? Pilots report that, with no view
out the window, there's an eerie sensation of motionlessness when cruising in
the Blackbird. |
